The Foundation of Eagle
With a long history in healthcare, Eagle is rightly regarded as a pioneer in the Australian ‘practitioner’ natural health sector. Originally founded by Dr Townsend Hopkins in pursuit of his passion and belief in natural medicine. Eagle has become renowned for its advanced and effective naturopathic products.
Born in Uruguay in 1913, Dr Townsend Hopkins first came into contact with naturopathic medicine when he contracted tuberculosis and was nursed back to health with the assistance of natural medicine. During his trips all over the world, Townsend witnessed traditional and folk medicine, and met practitioners of all modalities. This exposure had a huge impact on his vision on health.
In his early working life, Townsend’s first health industry occupation was with orthodox medicine at Lederle Laboratories, where scientists studied biochemical medicine and the effects of vitamins, amino acids and enzymes. It was at this point, in the 1940’s that Lederle Laboratories succeeded in synthesising folic acid.
In the 1950’s Townsend came to Australia with Lederle Laboratories. His strong interest in alternative forms of medicine led him to train in osteopathy, chiropractic, acupuncture, homoeopathy and naturopathy in Australia and to subsequently work at Langley Laboratories, which he took over in 1966. With a fresh approach and gained knowledge, Townsend started manufacturing products based on holistic principles. The outcome was a range of advanced and reliable products that Townsend’s team personally hand mixed, labelled and distributed.
Townsend Hopkins went on to found Eagle Pharmaceuticals, which continued to produce the top Langley Laboratories’ products, such as Streso-B, now known as Tresos-B. He combined vitamins, minerals, amino acids, herbs and homoeopathics into a comprehensive range of formulas, some of which carry forward to this day. Dedicated to natural therapies, Townsend concurrently ran a busy practice in Sydney, giving him first-hand insight into patients’ individual needs and the therapeutic results obtained with Eagle products. Townsend Hopkins worked with Eagle right up until his last days, passing away in 2001.
